Treasury instructions

Treasury Instructions are issued under Section 80 of the Public Finance Act 1989. They generally specify what the Chief Executive of a department of the Government must do.

Treasury Instructions are signed on behalf of the Secretary to the Treasury and all Chief Executives are required to comply with them to the extent that they apply to the relevant department.

The current version of the Treasury Instructions is Treasury Instructions 2018, issued on 31 July 2018. This version and other previous versions are available below.

The Treasury Instructions are currently being reviewed as part of the Treasury’s regular annual processes.  We expect this to be completed by the end of September with any updated Instructions to be added to the website then.

Treasury Circulars are also available using the link below.
