Victoria University of Wellington and the Treasury will host a conference in the capital in December on the long-term fiscal challenges facing New Zealand.
"The Affording our Future conference will bring together a range of renowned national and international speakers for two days to consider, discuss and test the available evidence about the emerging fiscal challenges that confront our ageing society," says Professor Bob Buckle, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Commerce at Victoria.
Professor Buckle says the conference will represent the culmination of months of research and analysis into the Crown's long-term financial position under the auspices of an External Panel of independent specialists and commentators.
"The panel, which I will chair, is tasked with testing and challenging the Treasury's initial assumptions and work as it prepares its third Long-term Fiscal Statement, due to be presented to Parliament next year."
"It is my expectation that this conference, and the research papers to be considered by the panel at its meetings between 30 August and 29 November, will help identify the range and potential combinations of policy options and trade-offs required to effectively and fairly manage the fiscal challenge before us as a nation."
Early bird conference registrations open 1 August. Information is available at: www.victoria.ac.nz/affording-our-future-conference-2012 or contact Administrator, Chair in Public Finance (64) (4) 463 9656 (Email: email@example.com)
