Victoria University of Wellington and the Treasury have confirmed a number of renowned national and international participants will be represented at the Affording our Future conference they are hosting on the implications of population ageing and other influences on the Crown's long-term financial position.
In addition to New Zealand and overseas academic specialists detailed on the on-line programme, confirmed speakers at the December conference in Wellington include Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf and Chief Economist Girol Karacaoglu, Professor Norman Gemmell, Chair in Public Finance at Victoria Business School, Robert Buckle, Dean of the Victoria Business School, Dr Susan St John, University of Auckland, former finance minister Sir Michael Cullen, Retirement Commissioner Diana Crossan and the Rt. Hon Simon Upton, a senior Minister in the 1990s.
The conference aims to promote an evidence-based discussion about the key fiscal challenges facing New Zealand over the long term, as well as assisting to identify the potential range of options available for managing those challenges ahead of the Treasury's next Statement on the Long-term Fiscal Position.
